The simplest of the three RFID configurations is one that uses an active reader and a passive tag. Each of the systems has its own pros and cons that can help you decide whether it’s right for your application. There are three main categories of RFID layout schematics that you can use based on these RFID tag types: passive, semi-passive, and active. While every type of RFID design label uses an active RFID reader, also known as an interrogator, the tags for each arrangement are different. Even when you’re dealing with a fairly straightforward technology like radio frequency identification (RFID) circuit board there are a lot of flavors to choose from. It seems like every technology out there now has a different configuration to achieve the best performance. Mobile RFID tracking includes some models of RFID-enabled handheld scanners, KANBAN carts, and vehicle-mounted RFID readers.When I’m designing a new PCB or product one of the hardest parts for me is choosing exactly which components I should use. Mobile RFID indicates the reader is mobile when the reader reads tags. These interrogation zones create a "bubble" of RF energy that can be tightly controlled through reader sensitivity and antenna range. Fixed RFID refers to when the reader and antenna are installed in a specific place through which the RFID tags pass, like a choke point or a dock door. They can be read within closed boxes or underneath a shipping crate – and the antennas can detect dozens of unique tags at a single time.RFID tracking systems can also be deployed in two different configurations. Line of sight is not required to capture the presence of an RFID tag. For example: RFID tags can be read when in proximity to an RFID reader - it is not necessary to "see” the tag, as with a bar code. Passive RFID tags are thin and inexpensive, and can be easily and affordably deployed to many cheaper assets.Both active and passive RFID tracking systems are vast improvements over the typical barcode IDs that are often used to identify assets. The tag draws power from it, energizing the circuits, which then sends the information encoded in the tag's memory to the antenna – to be collected by the RFID reader. Passive RFID tags depend on power from RFID antennas to broadcast their signals when radio waves from antennas are encountered by a passive RFID tag, the coiled antenna within the tag forms a magnetic field. As such, active RFID tracking is often used for fewer, high-value reusables. The presence of this battery makes active RFID tags more expensive than passive tags. ![]() Active RFID tags have circuits that are powered by an included battery, which is used to broadcast radio signals to a reader.
